03. Castaños Street - Gabriel Miró's birthplace
Gabriel Miró was born at 20 Castaños Street on July 28, 1879. This street, at the end of the 19th century, was full of stately homes that were built by the local bourgeoisie (for example, Salvetti Palace, 1887). Alicante was starting at that time the transformation from a provincial town into a modern 20th century city. The city dedicated the square at the end of the street to Gabriel Miró, the square is however better known as Plaza de Correos (Post Office Square). In the square we can find four monumental ficus macrophylla trees, three of which are over 100 years old.
