Located in Ruperto Chapí Square, Teatro Principal is the most important theatre building in Alicante. Construction started in 1846 in the Plaza del Barranquet. It was first called New Theatre to differentiate it from the old theatre on Liorna Street. The theatre was inaugurated on September 25, 1847. Ten years later it was renamed Teatro de Alicante and, shortly afterwards, Teatro Principal. In the same square we can also find Ideal Cinema, now closed.
